n Saturday June 20, 2009 Manhattan’s own Asphalt Green Sports & Fitness Complex, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting individuals of all ages achieve health through a lifetime of sports and fitness, had a party and all of NYC was invited – including New York Sharks, Adrienne Smith and Melissa Pickett. Celebrating their $3 million renovation project and reopening of their outdoor fields and facilities, Asphalt Green – the home to some of the city’s most popular and respected sports leagues, hosted its first annual Sports Carnival. Their long awaited renovation included a 75,000 square foot state-of-the-art Turf Field, a 800 square-yard track, and four light towers to illuminate every inch. The Asphalt Green staff used every square foot to hold soccer tournaments, 3×3 basketball games, a quarterback challenge, pro athlete appearances, and plenty of carnival games to entertain thousands of kids and their families from all over the city.
Dave Hollander, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of New York Family Sports Magazine – the official media sponsor for the Sports Carnival, personally invited the Sharks to join other pro athletes, such as Kim Hampton of the NY Liberty and members of the NY Red Bulls, for a meet and greet with their guests. Smith & Pickett signed autographs, took pictures and chatted with families. They also taught kids how to throw and catch a football before entering the Carnival’s Quarterback Challenge area where they had three chances to accurately throw a football in one of three targets!
The First Annual Asphalt Green Sports Carnival was a huge success as all of the children had a fun and memorable afternoon!
